Deer do have four legs…

May 4, 2026

She wants more embellishments but I just stitched a body for one of my deer people that is more deer than human. Her older siblings all walk on two legs. I just built them that way without really considering. What happens in the mind that moves on 4 legs instead of 2? What happens in the mind without hands? These questions have been with me since seeing elephants in Thailand, their grace and size producing a time warp sensation in me. Their agile trunks reaching, prodding, caressing, carrying things…like our hands but oh so different. Watching elephants shook me, left me feeling the weird bend of my own knees, the thin stretch of my skin across my shoulders, the precarity of my scrawny little neck protruding straight upward. Watching any animal reminds me of the strangeness of my own human form, the baffling variety that bodies come in. This deer sees the world from 4 legs. She scuffs the earth with her cloven hoof and leans forward to take in the smells. She pops her head up through the tall whispering grasses and stares my way. She is wondering what it would be like to walk on two legs.
